Teaching and Writing between Teaching and Writing

“The paradox of education is precisely this - that as one begins to become conscious one begins to examine the society in which he is being educated. ” - James Baldwin, A Talk to Teachers
I started my teaching career in Berkeley County, South Carolina, for the 2022-2023 school year. A suburb of Charleston, this district provided numerous opportunities to observe and teach the importance of viewing diversity as an asset, not a deficit, in the classroom.

I proudly taught American Literature to 11th-grade students, with one honors block. This content and grade level helped shape my teaching craft and motivated me to explore additional opportunities to develop my content and pedagogical skills.

A move to Norfolk, Virginia, allowed me to capitalize on my reflections of teaching 11th grade, and pursue an M.A.Ed in Curriculum and Instruction at William and Mary, while teaching 7th grade English for Newport News Public Schools.

Currently, I teach 11th-grade English and serve as an adjunct instructor for dual-enrollment students at Tidewater Community College, located at Lake Taylor High School in Norfolk, Virginia.
