Teaching and Writing between Teaching and Writing
"Our crown," you said, "has already been bought and paid for. All we have to do," you said, "is wear it." - Toni Morrison about James Baldwin, 1987
From 2016 to 2020, I majored in English and minored in African-American studies at Millersville University. I wore a different crown each year. With each passing semester, my appetite for knowledge and my growing curiosity were reflected in my writing and research pursuits.

Academically, I gravitated towards argumentative topics -- racial and sociological theories. Personally, my writing was just bleeding on paper. By my senior year, I was taught I could exercise all of these interests into well-choreographed, creative, analytical, or argumentative pieces.

These interests led me to pursue two advanced degrees: an MFA in Creative Writing and an M.A.ED in Curriculum and Instruction with a focus on Secondary English. I utilize both degrees daily, teaching high school English with Norfolk Public Schools, adjuncting for Tidewater Community College, and writing for professional publications and literary magazines.

Thank you for joining me. May you be encouraged to set new goals and do hard things. Stay kind, be brave, choose joy, and always wear your crown.
